Copy a Project

These steps assume you are creating a new project from an existing project. You are not overwriting data for an existing project.

  1. Select Project Data > Projects in the Navigation Menu. The Manage Projects tab window displays.
  2. Click New in the Ribbon Menu and then click Copy From. A separate Copy Project window displays.
  3. Select the Project you want to copy from the dropdown. The data from the project populates the rows in the window. At a minimum, this includes the assigned account structures (WBS) and project structures (calendar, rates, and resources). It may also include user defined code structures and account or work package documents for the project. There are four columns in the window: Select, From, To, and Action.
  4. Optional. Any items with a Select column check box enabled can be checked or unchecked to control what is copied into the new project. For any enabled Select column check box, click to deselect content you don't want to copy.
  5. Rename each selected item in the To column. This creates a unique copy of the data items for your new project.
    1. Click in the <Enter new Project Name> cell and type in the new project's name. The Action column is already set to "Create New."
    2. Click on each successive row and enter a new name in the To column cell. The Action column changes to read "Create New."

      Tips:

When the project you are copying is using global calendar, rate, and resource structures and you want the new project to also use the global structures, accept the default "Overwrite" setting in the Action column. If you want to create project unique calendar, rate, and resource structures using the data from the global structures, enter a new name in the To column for all three structures.

When assigning a new name in the To column cell for a user defined code structure, avoid using a name that is the same as an account structure (for example, the WBS), otherwise you will overwrite the account structure.

  6. At the bottom of the Copy Projects window there is an Assignment Data? check box. By default it is unchecked. If you want to copy the work package and resource assignment time phased data for the project, check this box.
  7. Click Copy. A copy status bar displays the copy progress and disappears.
  8. Click Refresh in the Ribbon Menu.
  9. Click on the Structure [Select] dropdown in the Ribbon Menu and select the project you just created.
